We are never lucky enough. But what if there are leftovers from the mushroom soup? Can you easily reheat mushroom dishes and boiled mushrooms? We explain what to consider when using leftovers when you can freeze mushrooms, and which mushroom dishes can be dangerous!


Reheat the mushrooms

If you cook a delicious mushroom soup, did you go to the forest and collect the mushrooms yourself? In this case, it is wild mushrooms. Cultivated mushrooms, on the other hand, are those found in the supermarket: champignons or oyster mushrooms. Chanterelles are often considered wild mushrooms, as they would cost more to raise than to collect from productive forests.

Cultured or cultured mushrooms can be safely frozen or reheated. Thanks to controlled cultivation, they are less contaminated with pollutants or germs. But here you should also not heat the cooked mushrooms more than once to avoid harm to your health.

You should never reheat mushroom dishes made with wild mushrooms – the germ load is incalculable.


Reheat the mushroom soup

Unless you have collected highly poisonous mushrooms, a tasty mushroom soup from the forest is also not dangerous. You can safely enjoy them, but only after the first cooking! Each time the soup is heated, the decomposition process of the mushrooms is accelerated. In this process, protein compounds are broken down from the fungus protein. People cannot use decomposition products well; therefore, mushrooms that have been heated and boiled multiple times can cause digestive upset, including nausea and diarrhea.

Important: when reheating mushroom dishes, heat them to 70-80°C, so don’t let the soup boil! This way most of the connections remain intact and the mushroom soup stays healthy.

Risk groups and myths

In the past, people were warned not to cook mushroom dishes ahead of time in order to reheat them. However, this warning comes from a time when refrigerators weren’t as powerful or as common as they are today.

If you’ve made mushroom soup, you can also reheat it if needed, but be careful who’s sitting at the table.


As there is always a residual risk of intolerance to reheated mushroom dishes, children and pregnant women should not eat reheated mushroom dishes. People with chronic diseases or with a digestive system weakened by surgeries or medications are also part of the risk group and should refrain from taking advantage of it.

Storage and reheating of mushroom dishes.

If you bought too many mushrooms, you can freeze or directly dry the raw mushrooms. Raw mushrooms should not be left unchilled for too long! You should also not reheat or serve salads with raw mushrooms the next day.

If you don’t want to store the mushroom soup in the freezer, you can store it on the middle shelf of the refrigerator for 1-2 days. Let the soup cool to room temperature before wrapping it up tightly and placing it in the refrigerator.

Important: do not heat mushroom dishes in the microwave! The heat is not uniform and you have no control over the temperature. Slow heating in a pot or pan is ideal.
