We headed along Castle Hot Springs Road to explore an impressive mill site. The Big Reef Mill was a former mica and beryllium producer that operated from the 1960s until at least 1972. With a variety of trails, weather conditions, and things to see, it was a great day on the ATVs. . 1. I have photos of the mine when operational if you would like them… D.M. Cantwell was my grandfather.

  2. My grandfather, Dee Marshall Cantwell, built the Big Reef Mill beginning in 1960 and operated it until ~1968 when he moved to Texas. My father helped him with constructing the hopper tower and pouring concrete several weekends over three years. My brothers and I went with him most of those weekends. We were all under 9 years old and it was like an adventure going up there. We played in the washes, climbed on the D-8 Caterpillar and just had a grand old time while they worked. Living back in the west valley again, I still drive up there at times (the road is almost impassible now, even in my 4×4 truck) and almost all of the steel has been removed, I assume by someone looking for scrap cash. D.M. Cantwell was released after a very brief stay in the Yavapai County jail when charges the were dropped (unsubstantiated) and moved with his wife out to Alabama (where we had moved by then) and eventually to Houston.

  3. Great video! Was just out to these two sites a few weeks ago, but really appreciate the background info you provide, plus the nice drone shots that add to what you can see from the ground.

  4. It's good you got on Castle Hot Springs Rd. before it got into heavy rain. My remembrance of that road is that it wd turn into red mud–and lots of it. I confess I was ignorant of the Big Reef Mill, will have to take a look. Good video and historical monologue.
